Lawrence, how long have you been working in the real estate industry?

18 years in several capacities with the last 10 years my focus has been in lending for real estate investors in the St. Louis Metropolitan area funding over $45,000,000+ in total funding volume.

How long have you worked for your current company?

6 years as of January of 2020 with Longhorn Investments, LLC

What compelled you to get involved in the real estate industry?

Early in my professional career after receiving my MBA from Lindenwood University, I discovered my “entrepreneurial spirit” and after exploring my options and interests, I began my path towards the real estate industry.

What do you love most about what you do? Helping people while assisting in developing my city is paramount; guiding new and experienced investors in the real estate industry by providing funding to help them build real estate portfolios that will lead them to financial independence! Just as important is my impact on my community. As a native of St. Louis, it gives me a sense of pride in being able to provide funding for investors and to increase our great city’s tax base one loan at a time!!

Where would you personally like to take your career?

I would like to continue to expand my client base and assist investors to pursue their dreams of financial independence through investing in real estate.

What has been your biggest challenge in this industry?

Most certainly COVID-19 has presented its very own unique set of challenges in the way we all do business. Trying to maintain a level of business connectivity while socially distancing is an ongoing challenge. But through innovation and the use of technology, we will continue to be the go-to source for funding in the St. Louis market.

What do you see as your next biggest career achievement?

Building Longhorn Investments, LLC into a reliable household name for real estate investors in the St. Louis Metro Area for years to follow.

What’s your favorite way to meet new clients?

I really enjoy face to face meetings, in person at networking events. Longhorn is an active sponsor of some great REI groups in the St. Louis Metro Area, in particular The Southside Investment Club (SSIC), Three Doors, Jeffco REI Group, and The Master Investors Tribe (MIT). Because of the current environment, I have had to pivot and focus on becoming innovative and connecting with clients via social media and video conferencing.

On what you do in this industry, what advice would you give real estate investors?

I’ve always been a firm believer that as a prospective real estate investor, you must treat this industry like a marathon and not a sprint. There are absolutely no short cuts! The truly successful investors know that there is always a need to get better at their craft every day.

What’s the most valuable skill or expertise you offer to real estate investors?

Communication and most importantly, accessibility. Realizing that real estate investing is not a 9 to 5, Monday through Friday profession, I must be available to investors 24/7, 365 via phone, text, video chat, and/or email. Realizing that entrepreneurs and real estate investors, in particular, are working daily to build their businesses, the greatest value I have seen is my ability to be accessible on their daily journey with them regardless of the day or time.

What do you feel is the most vital lesson you’ve learned in your career?

Never judge a book by its cover. The most knowledgeable, professional, and successful real estate investors don’t always appear perfectly polished. Some of my most effective clients were turned down for funding by several lenders before we funded the first of many loans for them.
